October 29, 2020

Hello Everyone,

Here is what we've been up to this week:

We worked with the Dash and Dot robots again this week. Students were tasked with making Dash go around a chair, create a personalized voice command, transforming Dash into a traffic light, and have Dash go through an obstacle course. Throughout this process, they worked on debugging by changing different variables in their code, worked collaboratively, demonstrated perseverance, and worked with different forms of measurement. Our class is loving working with them and everyone is excited to learn more during Science School next week!

Our class practiced different sketching techniques and had a lesson on labelling. Students sketched natural artifacts in our room. We discussed that scientific sketching and labelling is another tool observers use to document artifacts and experiences.

Today, we began the beginning of our multi-medium Halloween Inchie Art. Students will work with a variety of mediums to create 6 Halloween inspired inchies. We completed 2 parts of a 6 part art task. Here is a sneak peak.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun weekend! I can't wait to start Science School with everyone on Monday! If you have not sent your child's form to school, please do so on Monday!

Take care,

Ms. Carroll

 Hello Families,

We have been up to a lot of new things in Room 3! This week we were the first classroom to try out our new Dot and Dash Robots! Ask you child what they thought of Dot and Dash.

We has a mysterious box in our room. Students completed an I see, I think, I wonder thinking routine to make predictions and record noticings. You could ask what your child think it is and what are some questions they have about the box.

For this weeks STEM challenge we decided to take advantage of the weather and use the snow as the material. The tallest structure was 80cm tall!!

Finally, students created a map and a legend demonstrating all of the geographical features mentioned in the Wild Robot novel. Students created their own nomenclature cards to define a geographical feature. As a class we created a map and legend based on what we knew about Roz's Island. We then began to map out her journey.

Yesterday, an Open Minds Form was sent home. We are still waiting on CBE to set up the online payment. Once the payment is setup I will send out a School Messenger to inform you.

Halloween - Thursday, October 29

LBS is planning low-key Halloween activities on Thursday October 29.

If children are planning to dress up at school, please discuss plans with them for:

  • a costume that is comfortable to wear all day: able to sit down, move around easily and complete school tasks throughout the day,
  • regular sanitizing and hand-washing, as usual,
  • using an AHS face mask, costumes with attached masks or other “Halloween masks” are not to be worn and are not suitable for preventing the spread of airborne droplets,
  • school-appropriate themes (no gore, weapons and so on),
  • no shared food to be brought to school.

Children are not required to wear costumes and may choose to wear orange and black. If your family does not participate in Halloween, there will be alternate tasks and activities provided.

Students will be looking at examples/non-examples of costumes in their classrooms.  Based on the weather, we may hold a costume parade outside. Students are asked to maintain physical distancing during this outdoor event. We will send an invitation via text to families if an outdoor parade will occur. Families will be invited to view the parade from outside the edges of our school field.

October 30 is a CBE system-wide non-instructional day. Please mark your calendars, as this is a ‘No School’ day.

Headphones

 Hello Families,

Students will begin using the computers this week, as they are all re-imaged and ready to go. Can you please send your child a pair of headphones to have at school for when they are using the iPads or laptops.

If you child is in grade 3 can you please send them as soon as possible as we will be starting SLAs later this week.

Thanks,

Ms. Carroll

Thursday, October 8

Hello Families,

This week we have been learning about adaptations. Ask your child for an example of a behavioral and a structural adaptation. Students drew a scientific sketch of our class pet Coconut and discussed her behavioural and structural adaptations.

In math we continue to word on representing number using base 10. Students picked a number and came up with as many ways to represent their number using base 10.

We did have our first student -led virtual assembly today. Room 2 and 3 hosted the assembly and they were amazing. We cannot share the assembly out due to FOIP, but definitely as your child how it went. For the assembly we created a Found Poem using keywords that the students felt the pictures represented.  They worked together to create a great poem. Below are the pictures and the poem.

Have an amazing long weekend!
